Jazz ranges from Broadway to Contemporary and
is a performance dance & style that arose in the United States in the mid 20th century.
The two types of Jazz expand on African American vernacular styles of dance that arose with jazz music in the 1950's. Vernacular jazz dance incorporates moves such as the Charleston, Lindy hop and Ragtime. Dramatic jazz dance performed on the show stage was promoted by choreographers such as Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins. However, in the 1990s, "Jazz" was a term applied to classes in which students danced to various forms of pop music, and rarely jazz music.
Modern rejects the limitations of classical ballet, while pushing the boundaries of formal technique, timing, and training. Modern dance is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance which included dance styles such as ballet, folk, and social dancing; and primarily arose out of Europe and the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was considered to have been developed as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet.
At Connections Studio we recommend students begin this class at age 10 and up.
Hip Hop derives from street dances created in America during the 1970s with focus on individual expression, rhythm, and musicality. Hip Hop is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created and made popular by dance crews in the United States. The television show Soul Train and the 1980s films Breakin', Beat Street, and Wild Style showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages; therefore, giving hip-hop dance mainstream exposure.

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance combining song, spoken dialogue, acting and dance. Musical Theatre is focused on Broadway style choreography often infused with lots of Jazz movements.

Tap originated as a street dance in early 20th century America. Technique, Improvisation, Timing, and Rhythm are all components of Tap dancing. This form of dance is characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance routines; it is widely performed in musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the jazz tradition.
